#ENDSARS: Pope Francis prays end to violence in Nigeria

The Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis has joined the list of international figures weighing in on the recent escalation of tensions in Nigeria following the violence that attended the #ENDSARS protests against police brutality last week.

The Pope yesterday during a Holy Mass at St Peter’s Square in Vatican City, Rome prayed for a return of peace in the African country and for an end to violent tensions.

The #EndSARS protests turned violent following an attack on the protesters by thugs allegedly procured by the government in Abuja and the shooting of protesters in Lekki on Tuesday.

Across Lagos and other states within the country, vehicles, government buildings and private properties were razed and looted.

Pope Francis, who noted that he had been following the protests, prayed that the country would experience peace.

“I follow with particular concern the news coming from Nigeria about the recent violent clashes between law enforcement agencies and some young protesters,” he said.

“Let us pray to the Lord so that any form of violence might be avoided, in the constant search for social harmony in the promotion of justice and the common good.”

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday, during a virtual meeting with former leaders and security chiefs, said 69 people had been killed since the #EndSARS protests began.

Amnesty International had earlier reported that security operatives shot and killed at least a dozen protesters in Lekki.
