Soldier Who killed Lieutenant Suffering From Depression – Army

About a week after 10 soldiers were reportedly killed by Boko Haram, it has been revealed in a report by Sahara Reporters that one of the officers of the Nigerian Army who died, identified as Babakaka Shehu Ngorgi, a lieutenant, was allegedly killed by another soldier in Bama, Borno State.

 The late Lieutenant, attached to the 202 Battalion in Bama Borno State got Married on the 7th of December, 2019 at the command guest house in Maiduguri.

Ngorgi was said to have been having a conversation with his wife when he was shot from the back several times.

While reactions from different quarters have trailed the news as to why the soldier would commit such act. The Spokesman of the Nigerian Army Colonel Sagir Musa said the soldier who shot at Lieutenant Ngorgi was  suffering from depression

 The statement reads….

A troop of the Nigerian Army serving in 202 Battalion of 21 Special Armoured Brigade Bama, Borno State, went berserk at about 1030 hours on the 29th of July 2020 and fired   at an officer (a Subaltern) which led to his death.The incident happened when the soldier approached the officer who was standing in front of the Unit’s Headquarters making a phone call. The soldier has been arrested, is in custody undergoing investigation. General situation in the unit is calm”.

The remains of the deceased officer have been evacuated to 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital. Investigation into the case has since been instituted to determine the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident. The family of the deceased has already been contacted. The Nigerian Army sympathizes and condoles with the family at this trying moment, and pray to the Almighty God to repose the soul of the departed and grant his family and other loved ones the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

A similar incident happened in February 2020, where a Corporal in the Army serving at the Theater Command Operation LAFIYA DOLE, Army Super Camp 15, located at Malam Fatori, Opened Fire on his Colleagues, Killing 4 and Injuring 2 before also killing himself.

While the military authorities revealed that investigation into the case has since been instituted to determine the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident, 5 months after, nothing has been said.
