Senate to service chiefs: Resign now

The Nigerian senate has passed a resolution asking the service chiefs to immediately resign from their positions.

The resolution of the upper legislative chamber followed a motion sponsored by Ali Ndume, the senator representing Borno south and chairman of the senate committee on army.

The service chiefs Gabriel Olonisakin, chief of defence staff; Tukur Buratai, chief of army staff; Sadique Abubakar, chief of air staff; and Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, chief of naval staff have all exceeded the official service years.

It is unclear if the senate’s motion was in response to the rising insecurity across the country with bandits and terrorists of various sects causing nightmare for millions of Nigerians in the northern and southern parts of the country.

Tens of thousands of Nigerians have been killed by various criminal groups in the last few years. Armed herdsmen, Boko Haram terrorists, highway robbers, kidnappers and arsonists have continued to endanger and terminate the lives of millions of Nigerians.

Millions of people, including women and children, have been displaced from the homes following the menace of the criminal groups- with little answers coming from the security agencies. Even the military have also suffered severe losses as hundreds of its personnel have been killed while confronting the terror groups.

President Muhammadu Buhari has refused to heed calls by several prominent Nigerians including former president Olusegun Obasanjo to dismiss the service chiefs and engage new hands to confront the worsening security situation in the country.

Many Nigerians will watch with keen interest to see how the president would respond to the resolution by the senators.
