In a 15 minute video which has since gone viral posted by a Nigerian Navy Seaman, Haruna Goshit from Jos Plateau state, the seaman could be heard accusing Rear Admiral Ifeola Mohammed, the Chief of Policy and Plans of inhumane treatment.
In his words, Seaman Haruna alleged:
“I started working with him, this man started frustrating me. I told him my father was no more and I needed to go for my sister’s wedding, he said I should go and withdraw N4000 and give it to Mallam Ibrahim to do some repairs in his house. He could not refund the money back to me. Even when I came back, I was paid RCA, this man punished me saying I should go hug a tree which was an abode for soldier ant. I was bitten by those ants and I could not bear the pain, to make fun of me, he did a video call with his wife to show her with he put me through, because I was paid RCA and I could not appreciate him that is not an offence, if it was there is a way he would punish me”
The embittered officer through his lawyer sued for damages and has petitioned the Chief of Defence Staff and all relevant department and agencies for him to get redress but till now, no action has been taken.
I want to tell Nigerians that I am not safe, that the Navy has failed me, the Armed forces has failed me the way they failed Nigerians. Because I have written all these letters to the chief of Defence Staff as well as Chief of Naval Staff but no action was taken
Reacting to this video in a statement, the Coordinator defence media operation Major General John Enenche said
“The attention of the Nigerian Military has been drawn to a video trending in some quarters alleging maltreatment of one Seaman Haruna Goshit (a naval rating) by a senior naval officer. In the viral video, the said naval rating stated how he was unjustly maltreated by a superior senior naval officer. However, in line with global best practices, the Military High Command has commenced investigation on the viral video with a view to unraveling the true state of affairs.”
The Military hierarchy has assured the general public that the outcome of the investigation will be made known when concluded.
