Magu Wants To Be Released On Bail, “His Boys” Grilled As Buhari Approves Suspension From Office

Ibrahim Magu, the embattled acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has applied to Mohammed Adamu, inspector general of police, to be released on bail.

Magu has been in detention since Monday when security operatives picked him up at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja and brought him before the Justice Ayo Salami presidential panel probing allegations of corruption, misconduct and abuse of office against him.

However, Magu has now requested the inspector general of police to grant him bail on self recognition. In letter to the IGP on his behalf by Oluwatosin Ojaomo, Magu pleaded to be released on bail.

Abubakar Malami, the minister of justice who supervises the EFCC had written to the president earlier in June asking that Magu be replaced as the nation’s anti-corruption czar after he accused him of violation of public trust.

Magu was alleged to have mishandled the recovered loot and sold off seized assets to associates and cronies. Malami also accused the now suspended EFCC helmsman of insubordination.

Also this Friday, Umar Jibrilu Gwandu, Malami’s media assistant  announced that the president, Muhammadu Buhari has approved the suspension of Magu as acting chairman of the EFCC.

On Thursday, the Ayo Salami panel questioned a group of EFCC operatives called “Magu Boys” to find out what they know about the alleged gross abuse of process within the Commission in the last five years. The “Magu boys” are officers alleged to be in the good books of the suspended EFCC boss.
