Coronavirus Cases Exceeds 10M Globally, 25,694 in Nigeria

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the worst is yet to come as over 10 million people have been infected with the coronavirus globally, and 500,000 cases have died from the virus.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Ghebreyesus, stated this during a virtual briefing reported by BBC on Monday. He noted that many people would be infected by the virus if governments did not begin to apply the right appropriate policies.

He said; “Six months ago, none of us could have imagined how our world and our lives would be thrown into turmoil by this new virus.

“We all want this to be over. We all want to get on with our lives but the hard reality is this is not even close to being over. Although many countries have made some progress, globally the pandemic is actually speeding up.

“We are all in this for the long haul. We will need even greater stores of resilience, patience, humility and generosity in the months ahead.

“In an atmosphere of global political division and fractures on a national level, the worst is yet to come. I’m sorry to say that”.

However, the worst-hit countries are the United States of America, Russia, Brazil and India, with a combined figure of about 5 million infections, more than half of the global cases reported. Other severely affected countries are Spain, Italy and France.

For Africa, according to the data collected by the Africa Center for Disease Control as of Tuesday evening, over 383,747 cases have been recorded in the continent, while 183, 421 cases have recovered.

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on Tuesday evening, announced 561 new cases of the virus in Nigeria, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 25,694. The country also recorded 17 deaths from the infection, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths from the virus to 590.
