Ali Ndume, Borno Senator Warns Against Amnesty for Boko Haram, Accuses the Buhari Administration of Insincerity

The senator representing Borno south in the national assembly, Ali Ndume, has kicked against the de-radicalisation and reintegration of Boko Haram terrorists into the society by the Muhammadu Buahri led federal government, accusing the authorities of insincerity.

The military had in 2016 launched Operation Safe Corridor, an initiative for the de-radicalisation and rehabilitation of captured terrorists.

According to the military hierarchy, the purpose of the operation, is to reintegrate repentant Boko Haram members into society.

Recently, more than 600 “repented terrorists” completed the de-radicalisation, rehabilitation and reintegration (DRR) programme.

Ali Ndume however believes that the exercise would amount to nothing, telling a BBC Hausa service programme that the terrorists “would never repent.”

Ndume insisted that the government must stop the programme and put its attention to other more critical, social impact matters.

“This government’s programme is unacceptable to our people. The right thing is to stop it, forthwith,” he said.

“Not that they even apologised to you, they apologised to the government with the thinking that government has failed and that is why they are being pampered,” he said.

“They are like Kharajites. Many among those released have since run away. They will never repent.

“The government should know what to do about them. But not re-introducing someone to you, who has killed your parent, or your relations.

“If there is sincerity of purpose in this, those in the IDP camps should be trained in various trades and vocation so that they could start life again.”

The re-integration of the (former) terrorists elements into the society by the government is raising plenty of dusts in the several parts of the north east.

Residents of Borno for example have openly kicked against the exercise. Several persons in the IDP camps are also not comfortable with the decision of the government to welcome the terrorists elements into the society even as the victims are still suffering the impact of their actions.
