The death has been announced of Pierre Nkurunziza, President of Burundi at the age of 55. He has been leading the East African country since 2005 and was due to step down in August.
An official statement said he died after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was admitted in hospital on Saturday after telling aides he felt unwell.
His condition was said to have improved but on Monday he had a cardiac arrest and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
