NLC President To Employers: Do Not Be Quick To Lay Off Workers

Ayuba Wabba, the President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has appealed to employers to be slow in laying off workers in reaction to the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ayuba lamented the spate of jobs losses in the country inviting employers to be considerate in their relationship with the workforce especially at a time of biting economic realities, insisting that the economic template adopted by Westerners will not be suitable to the country’s system.

According to the NLC president, “we are not at the same level of development as some of those advanced countries where there are social security covers that cover everybody including unemployment benefits.”

In his view, there are no social security covers in the country for employees which leave them vulnerable to the vagaries of changing economic realities which happen when jobs are lost or the employee falls ill and cannot be as productive as he once was.

Wabba, who spoke in a television programme urged employers to be considerate, smart and innovative in responding to the issue of high unemployment rate in the country, revealing that the rampant loss of jobs would threaten the country’s social fabric.

The labour leader admitted that resources have dwindled but insisted that a dynamic approach must be evolved to ensure stability in the system to avoid security chaos and other likely fall outs of social frustration as a result of high unemployment, rising poverty and misery.

Unemployment rate in Nigeria is currently hovering around 25% with experts suggesting that the figure could rise further in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic unless drastic actions are taken by public authorities and the country’s economic managers.
