Edo Guber: INEC Chairman Reads the Riot Act to Political Parties

The INEC boss spoke at the inter-agency consultative committee on election on Wednesday. He reiterated his earlier position that the deadline will not be extended after June 27.

Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given political parties 10 days to conduct their primary election for the Edo state governorship poll.

Yakubu insisted that the conduct of party primaries must follow laid down rules and regulations to avoid what he called “unnecessary litigation.”

The INEC boss spoke at the inter-agency consultative committee on election on Wednesday. He reiterated his earlier position that the deadline will not be extended after June 27.

As at Wednesday, June 17,  only 15 political parties had indicated interest in the September 19 election.

Yakubu wants the political parties to obey the wishes of the electorates and play by the rules. He warned that the Commission would not tolerant any form of abuse of process or violence against voters, electoral workers or any other stakeholder group in the forthcoming election.

The Edo state guber election has been billed for September 19 by the electoral umpire.
