After Six Months In Kuje Correctional Facility, Orji Uzor Kalu Returns To The Senate

Kalu returned on Tuesday to take his seat at the upper legislative chamber after his release from six months incarceration at the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Kuje over alleged misappropriation of over N7 billion belonging to the Abia State government when he was the governor between 1999 and 2007.

Former governor of Abia State and The Chief Whip of the Senate, Orji Uzor-Kalu is back in the senate. The President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, announced Kalu’s presence on the floor of the upper legislative chamber at the resumption of plenary.

Kalu returned on Tuesday to take his seat at the upper legislative chamber after his release from six months incarceration at the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Kuje over alleged misappropriation of over N7 billion belonging to the Abia State government when he was the governor between 1999 and 2007.

Lawan welcomed Kalu with the following words: “This is a season of congratulations. On behalf of the Senate, I’m congratulating the Chief Whip of the Senate and indeed the Chief Whip of the National Assembly. We thank God for His mercies for you to be here. You are welcome.”

Orji Uzor Kalu was jailed for 12 years on December 9, 2019 over corrupt practices by the Federal High Court and affirmed by the Court of Appeal, but the Supreme Court faulted the process leading to Kalu’s incarceration and ordered a fresh trial.
