COVID-19: CUPP, PDP Berate Buhari For ‘Failing’ to Update, Douse Tension of Nigerians

The Opposition Peoples Democratic Party and the coalition of United Political Parties have berated President Muhammadu Buhari, for “failing” to address and update Nigerians on the rising cases of COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria.

The PDP, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbodiyan commended the health workers, organized private sector and corporate bodies for their response in cash donations and other interventions in the efforts to contain and stop further spread of COVID-19 in the country.

The party, however, said President Buhari has not demonstrated leadership qualities to allay the worries of Nigerians.

“The PDP lamented that President Muhammadu Buhari had not demonstrated expected visibility to give hope and direction, as well as douse public apprehension particularly at a time the public space is awash with uncertainties regarding the status of the Presidential villa since his Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari tested positive to COVID-19. The party however urged Nigerians not to despair over what they say is President Buhari’s failure to make himself available in personally leading in the search for the solution and regularly addressing the nation on the developments on issues related to the pandemic, like other world leaders.”

The party also commended our health workers and other public safety functionaries for their sacrifices in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic despite lapses by the Buhari Presidency, which had failed in being visible and leading from the front in the effort to combat the scourge.

The party expressed happiness with the response so far received from the private sector just as it urged the authorities to ensure judicious use of the resources while calling on other public-spirited organizations, groups, and individuals to join in the overall effort to curtail the impact of the deadly virus in our nation.

The PDP said it is optimistic that…

Despite such manifest leadership failure at this critical time, our nation will overcome the present challenge with our brotherliness and collective resilient spirit, for which we are known all over the world.”

On his part, the spokesperson of the oppositions’ CUPP, Ikenga Ugochinyere also raised a question in his statement saying ‘If the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson can test positive to Coronavirus and still leading the British government’s fight against the fight why is Nigeria President Gen Muhammadu Buhari who has tested negative and who is strong hale and hearty, hiding away from showing leadership or daily updating the people he claimed voted for him like all world leaders are doing?

We can only keep waiting on God to save us and nothing more because Buhari can not help Nigerians.’ Ugochinyere said

Earlier, the opposition Coalition CUPP  had urged the state governors of opposition parties to shutdown their states for two weeks as part of efforts to mitigate the spread of the deadly Coronavirus.

“The opposition Coalition CUPP after a detailed review of the growing threat of the fast-spreading and deadly Corona-virus have resolved and wish to advise all state governors elected on the Opposition Coalition platform and also plead with governors on ruling party platforms APC to adopt 14 days temporarily shut down, movement restriction and seat at-home measures like the one announced by the Rivers Governor, Gov. Wike as a proactive and emergency offensive to help halt the virus from spreading nationwide and turning into a national calamity.”

“In furtherance of the above, we wish to direct our governors to immediately shut down their land/sea borders to stop interstate movement, close down their airspace working with the Federal Government especially FAAN and stop all public gatherings, burials, close down motor parks, cinemas, etc. and impose a 14 days stay at home during which those already with the virus will manifest and be isolated and treated thereby wiping the virus.”

“We also appeal to citizens that will be affected and the Federal Government to work with the states to enforce these painful yet effective measures as a last effort to deal a fatal blow to this virus.”
