Coronavirus: Nigerians Now Export Face Masks to China

“Over the last three weeks, face masks have become the most sought after commodity in Nigeria. With over 100 million face masks being unpatriotically exported to Asia using Murtala Mohammed Airport and Port Harcourt International Airport.

Since the over two months-long outbreak of the coronavirus from Wuhan China to over 28 countries in the world, nations have set up measures to protect themselves if the outbreak gets into their country, but the case is different for Nigeria.

After the federal government asked passengers from Asia that arrive into Nigeria to quarantine themselves, the senator representing Anambra South, Ifeanyi Uba has raised an alarm under a matter of urgent national importance that China is seeking protective face mask from Nigeria and other African countries in its battle against the coronavirus…

“Further disturbed by the distress call from a Chinese friend who confidentially and reliably informed me of the fact that Chinese companies have sent their agent to source for a medical face mask in Nigeria and other African countries. “Ubah revealed.

A face mask is vital for protection during an outbreak to prevent the transfer of virus through the air from an infected person to an uninfected person. However, Nigerians who are too ‘money Conscious’ do not care that there had been suspected cases of the coronavirus at its doorstep in Africa…

Also, it is worrisome that the exploitation of this face mask has led to a scourge in the market price. As at 5th of November 2019, shops that usually sell one piece of face mask for 10 naira, now sell it for 80 naira, while a pack consisting of 50 pieces, has now inflated from 500 naira to 3,000 naira and a carton consisting of 40 packs also inflated from 20,000 naira to 120,000 naira.

“Concerned that major retailers and suppliers in Asia have been preserving their face masks and reporting surgical masks shortage as a result of the outbreak and while Nigeria has continued to export imported face masks available in the stores to Asia and other affected countries.“ Ifeanyi Ubah said.

Asians can be seen all over the internet with protective face masks through the virus may be aerosolized (does not require physical contact), however the continuous export of the protective face mask to Asia will leave Nigeria in a disastrous position if the virus crosses into our border…

“Worried that Nigeria is at a brink of an imminent outbreak given our massive population and frequency of travel and with the booming shortage of protective surgical face mask, we may be on our way to creating a devastating global situation,” Ubah added.

Nigeria revealed that it can diagnose coronavirus, then what? As far as I know there is no known cure for the virus just yet.

The coronavirus is killing people in hundreds with 30% positive diagnoses daily. Over 60 million people have been quarantined in China alone.
