Nigerians To Pay N5,000 for National ID Card

The National Identity Management Commission now charges N5000 to replace lost National Identity Card. However, Nigerians have termed this ‘criminal’.

NIMC, while responding to an enquiry on Twitter also disclosed that renewal of expired ID cards would now attract a fee of N3,000.

Established in 2007 to create, operate and manage Nigeria’s national identity card database. As at September, 2019, the NIMC stated that it had enrolled about 36 million Nigerians nationwide.

It has also in recent time disclosed plans to enroll Nigerians in the Diaspora, but only 79 Nigerians reportedly enrolled due to the fees attached to it in the United States.

The Commission had also complained about paucity of funds, saying it would need at least N132bn to capture every Nigerian within a period of three to five years.

Recently, the NIMC mandated the NIN registration for UTME applicants.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) stated that starting from year 2020, UTME/Direct Entry candidates would register for its examinations with their NIN to solve the challenges of multiple registrations.
