Niger Bans Exportation of Rice to Nigeria

The closure of borders by the Federal Government has forced Niger Republic to ban the exportation of rice into Nigeria.

In August, Federal Government announced the closure of its four geo-political zones across the country in an attempt to stop the smuggling of contraband goods, including food and petrol.

At a joint press conference, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Hameed Ali disclosed the decision of the government of Niger Republic to ban the exportation of rice to Nigeria.

As a result of this, the government of Niger Republic has issued a circular banning the exportation of rice to Nigeria.

“The government, through diplomatic channels will continue to engage our neighbours to agree to comply with ECOWAS Protocol on Transit.

“Goods that are on the prohibition list in Nigeria, such as rice, used clothes, poultry products and vegetable oil should not be exported to the country.

“As a result of this [border] closure, Niger Republic has already circulated an order banning exportation of rice in any form to Nigeria.”

Niger is not the only country that is feeling the negative effect of the closure of her borders as most traders in Benin Republic are battling the consequential effect.

Reports have indicated that it is now common to see spoilt unsold vegetables abandoned by the roadside or in some cases, even rotting on the vine.
