The Southeast region has constantly complained of neglect by President Mohammadu
Buhari’s administration.Many believe the attitude of the president towards the region stems from the low votes he received during the 2019 elections from the region.
In 2015, President Buhari polled only 198,248 votes in all the five states in region – Abia,
Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, and Imo. However, in 2019, President Buhari fared better in the southeast polling 403,968 votes. Many Igbos expect this significant increase in votes to reflect on the president’s consideration for the southeast region.
During a chat with Roots TV Nigeria, Chukwuka Utazi, senator representing Enugu North
Constituency confirmed the belief by many Igbos that the president was neglecting the
south East because they overwhelmingly voted for the Peoples Democratic Party during
the 2015 and 2019 elections. He believes an Igbo presidency is an answer to the cries of the Igbos.
