Senator representing Kogi West District, Dino Melaye has lost the appeal of a tribunal ruling which nullified his election as a Senator. This was confirmed in a tweet by the lawmaker.
The lawmaker won the February 23 Senatorial election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, contesting on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party. However, Dino’s victory was challenged in court by Senator Smart Adeyemi, the APC candidate, who was a two-term senator.
On August 23, 2019, the Kogi State National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal nullified Dino Melaye’s election. Smart Adeyemi challenged Melaye’s victory on three grounds of irregularities,over-voting, and non-compliance with the Electoral Act. The three-man panel led by Justice Chijioke, A.O. unanimously upheld Adeyemi’s appeal and ordered re-election. The lawmaker is still confident of victory even in the event of re-election.
