Tinubu to Open African Counter-Terrorism Summit in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to inaugurate the African Counter-Terrorism Summit in Abuja today, organized by Nigeria with support from the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism.

The summit, themed ‘Strengthening Regional Cooperation and Institution Building to Address the Evolving Threat of Terrorism,’ will run from April 22 to April 23, 2024.

The summit, aimed at fostering multilateral counter-terrorism collaboration, intends to reshape the global response to terrorism in Africa. The President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ajuri Ngelale, highlighted that the event will emphasize African-led and African-owned solutions.

The summit will convene participants from various African countries, including heads of state, government officials, international organization representatives, and civil society groups.

The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina Mohammed, will be present, and the event will conclude with remarks from Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the UN Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism, Mr. Vladimir Voronkov.

This summit is particularly significant given the prevailing security challenges in Nigeria, notably banditry and terrorism.
