Senate Condemns Terrorist Attacks in Benue

The Senate has urged the Federal Government and relevant authorities to invest in surveillance technology and equipment to detect and prevent the recurrence of terrorism. This call came as the Senate strongly condemned the recent attacks on communities in Benue by terrorists.

Additionally, the Red Chamber called upon the Inspector General of Police, the Air staff, and heads of other security agencies to promptly deploy security personnel to address the ongoing attacks by armed terrorists posing as herdsmen in the five affected communities.

These resolutions were reached following the adoption of a motion on urgent public importance presented by Senator Memga Udende (APC, Benue North) during Wednesday’s plenary session.

Senator Udende, in his presentation, expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity in the nation. He highlighted the tragic killings of over 50 individuals in Kwande, Logo, and Katsina-Ala Local Government Areas of Benue State, along with the abduction of the Ukum Local Government Chairman, Rev. Gideon Haanongon, and the state Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, Matthew Abo, within the past three months.

In his contribution to the debate, former Senate President Ahmad Lawan (APC, Yobe North) lamented the collapse of the country’s security architecture, leaving Nigerians vulnerable and disheartened. Senator Lawan expressed dismay that despite substantial budgetary allocations to defense, terrorists, bandits, and other criminal elements still maintain dominance.

Following the deliberations by lawmakers, the Senate unanimously urged the Service Chiefs, including the Inspector General of Police, to promptly deploy their personnel to eliminate the criminal elements terrorizing parts of Benue state.
