President Tinubu Congratulates Senegal’s President-Elect, Faye

President Bola Tinubu extended his congratulations to Mr. Bassirou Faye on his election as the President of the Republic of Senegal, in a statement released on Wednesday.

He also commended incumbent President Macky Sall for overseeing an election widely regarded as peaceful and transparent.

Tinubu’s message of felicitation was conveyed through a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, titled ‘President Tinubu congratulates President-elect Bassirou Dionaye Faye and the people of the Republic of Senegal.’

Faye emerged as Senegal’s President-elect after achieving a historic victory in the presidential election held on Sunday, March 24, 2024.

According to the country’s electoral commission, over 7 million people were registered to vote out of the approximately 17 million Senegalese citizens. The civil society observer group known as COSCE reported a voter turnout of over 61 percent.

Candidates needed to secure more than 50 percent of the vote to win.

While the Senegalese News Agency, APS, stated that the constitutional council would officially announce the results on April 3, preliminary results indicated that the opposition candidate, Faye, garnered approximately 53.7 percent of the votes.

Additionally, former Prime Minister and candidate of the ruling coalition, Amadou Ba, obtained 36.2 percent based on counts from 90 percent of polling stations in the first-round vote, as reported by the electoral commission.

Ba, who enjoyed the support of incumbent President Sall, graciously accepted defeat in light of the preliminary results.

Faye responded to these developments by stating, “I salute the approach of the other candidates who, without exception, have honoured a very Senegalese tradition without even waiting for the official results to be announced by the authorised state bodies.”

In response to the outcome of the election, Tinubu said, “President-elect Faye comes with great promise and a sterling record, wishing him success as he takes on this important job of leading the good people of Senegal.”
