No fewer than 50 passengers including Islamic school children aboard a boat have been feared dead after the boat capsized on the Bagwai river in Bagwai Local Government Area of Kano State.
The deceased students and their teacher were said to be on their way to attend Maulud, an Islamic celebration held annually to commemorate the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
The Police Spokesperson in Kano, Abdullahi Kiyawa told newsmen that seven of the passengers in the boat were rescued after the accident but the others are still missing.
A resident of the area, Abubakar Ado said that the boat was conveying Islamiyah school children and other passengers from Badau village to Bagwai town, the council headquarters.
Ado added that the boat was reported to be overloaded with over 50 persons. He said most of the passengers were still missing.
